Spade cane with statuette, Malinké or Bandié (southern Bamba - Lot 112
Spade cane with statuette, Malinké or Bandié (southern Bambara), Côte d'Ivoire / Mali border region Wood, metal Height: 49 cm Provenance: French private collection The staff here features a wrought-iron spike, and was a badge of magical power, perhaps for a blacksmith (Numu). An old patina of use and smoke covers it, indicating its age. It features a long cylindrical handle, slightly flared at the ends, topped by a female figure sculpted in the round. The effigy stands on short, slightly bent legs, her feet blending into the handle. The long arms frame the abdomen with its protruding navel, the hands with their finely detailed fingers resting on the thighs. The model's vitality is underscored by a firm chest projected into space. Beautiful chevron-shaped scarification marks adorn the abdomen and arms. The head, with its narrow face animated by white pupils, is framed by large crescent-shaped ears, one of which, pierced, was probably adorned with a jewel. The headdress unfurls into a delicately incised crest. The slightly curved iron blade is attached to the back of the head, reinforcing the dynamism and balance of the composition. The dark, old patina, crusty in places, underlines the quality and age of the object. Very fine craftsmanship.
