Bibliography: A-M. Passez, Antoine Vestier, Paris, 1989, no. 46, reproduced. Isabelle Claire Gogels (1727-1788), was the daughter of an Antwerp banker who had made his fortune in the Imperial India Company. In 1757, she married Julien Depestre, later Count of Seneffe and Turnhout, a wealthy businessman, with whom she had seven children. In 1758, the couple became owners of the seigneury of Seneffe (Belgium) and began construction of the château of the same name. of the same name. Other seigneuries were subsequently acquired. On her husband's death, Isabelle Depestre, usufructuary of Seneffe, continued to embellish the property, which she then passed on to her eldest son, Joseph. This is the first portrait Vestier painted for the Depestre family. Between 1785 and 1791, he painted five other portraits of the members of this influential family, whose considerable wealth and important offices made them a household name. Related to Intendant Foullon, they provided the artist with an interesting clientele. A replica is held in a French collection (see op. cit. supra, no. 47, reproduced).
