Kanaga Dogon mask, Mali - Lot 125
Kanaga Dogon mask, Mali Wood, pigments Height: 74 cm Provenance: French private collection Mask featuring a stylized face, with a central ridge in high relief running from the top of the skull to the mouth, forming the bridge of the nose. On either side, the face unfolds on oblique planes, with hollowed-out eyes. The horn-capped head is surmounted by a vertical superstructure, pierced in two places by four holes intended to accommodate the perpendicular sections forming the typical double cross, which have now disappeared. Beautifully preserved polychrome - white, black, red. Associated with the Dama ceremonies, a funeral ritual designed to accompany the soul of the deceased to the afterlife, the Kanaga mask embodies a powerful cosmological symbol, evoking the balance between heaven and earth.
