Ibedji Yoruba statuette, Nigeria - Lot 102
Ibedji Yoruba statuette, Nigeria Wood, pigments, beads Height: 29 cm This sculpture belongs to the stylistic corpus of the Oshogbo region. It features a female figure standing on a circular base, arms at her sides. The head features a stylized face with bulging eyes and a prominent nose, the features softened by ritual use. Horizontal scarificartions with eight incisions on each cheek. The headdress is a remarkable feature: it is sculpted in the form of a high, openwork headdress, covered in lye blue and richly decorated with geometric motifs, testifying to the care given to the treatment of the head, considered the seat of destiny and spiritual identity in Yoruba aesthetics. The figure wears several sets of glass beads, including a necklace and bracelets around the waist and arm. These ornaments are typical of Ibeji ritual practices, with families regularly dressing and decorating the figures to honor and maintain the symbolic link with the departed twin. The surface of the wood shows a dark brown patina with traces of use and ancient ritual handling, as well as cracks and areas of wear, testifying to the figure's age and domestic use.
