Collage with cigar wrappers - Lot 70
Collage with cigar wrappers Glass top 20th century Large panel composed of a meticulous assemblage of polychrome papers and cigar bands, forming a radiant composition dominated by red and gold. In the center is a bust of a couple, depicted from the front: - a man in a dark, richly decorated military uniform, - a woman in a low-cut court dress, with her hair styled in the Belle Époque fashion. The portraits, likely derived from commercial chromolithographs, are surrounded by a profusion of decorative vignettes: allegorical figures, religious figures, medallions, coats of arms, and floral motifs. The composition features a symmetrical, radiating layout, typical of commemorative or patriotic works. This type of artwork belongs to a form of popular art practiced between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. At that time, cigar manufacturers distributed illustrated bands depicting monarchs, prominent figures, historical scenes, or national symbols, which enthusiasts would then assemble into decorative panels.
