Figurehead, Vao Island, Vanuatu - Lot 217
Figurehead, Vao Island, Vanuatu Wood, pigments L : 60 cm Provenance: French private collection Polychrome removable bow element, representing a stylized frigate bird. The body, composed of two interlocking volumes, is punctuated by a central aperture that lends lightness and dynamism to the whole. The long, arched neck and tapering head accentuate the forward tension, underscoring the effigy's airy, slender character. The dynamic composition evokes the animal's impetus towards the open sea, like a tutelary presence accompanying and guiding fishermen as they navigate. In Vanuatu, ownership of a pirogue was reserved for high-ranking individuals. The owner paid a sculptor - often in pigs, a prestigious commodity - to create a bow reflecting his social status. These monoxyle outrigger prows, called naho, played an essential role in the social organization of the clan. Striking or damaging the bow of another's pirogue was a serious offense, punishable by death.
