Didagur mask, Blackwater River, Papua New Guinea - Lot 211
Didagur mask, Blackwater River, Papua New Guinea H: 45 cm / L: 95 cm Provenance: collected in situ French private collection A rare wickerwork mask, enhanced with white, red and black pigments, featuring a stylized human face with an exceptionally elongated nose. The mask's frame is made of wicker, clay and natural pigments. The bridge of the nose and the contours of the circular eyes are formed by slightly raised braided beads. Used during initiation rites and presented in pairs - one embodying a male spirit, the other a female - didagur masks testify to the great mastery of the Blackwater River region's populations in the art of basketry.
