Namji doll, Cameroon - Lot 139
Namji doll, Cameroon Wood, beads, cowries Height: 30 cm Provenance: French private collection Carved by blacksmiths and decorated by women, then worn on their backs or stomachs by their owners, fertility dolls such as this one have a strong ritual and symbolic dimension. The volumes of the body disappear beneath the accumulation of ornaments - pearls, cowrie shells, metallic elements - forming a mass with indistinct contours. The long, cylindrical neck, adorned with a necklace of multi-row pearls, supports a miniature, ogive-shaped head with two small circular eyes. The absence of a summit crest suggests the effigy's feminine character.
