Bwa buffalo mask, Burkina Faso - Lot 26
Bwa buffalo mask, Burkina Faso Wood, pigments H: 42 cm / W: 26 cm Provenance: French private collection Zoomorphic mask from the Ouahon (Kô) society, representing a stylized buffalo head, characterized by a short, triangular-sectioned muzzle, the skull surmounted by two lateral ears and a pair of large, crescent-shaped horns. The eyes, in polychrome circles, contrast with the white surface, as do the finely engraved as do the finely engraved geometric motifs on the muzzle. Native repairs, in the form of staples and cords, are visible on the horns. Good overall condition, with well-preserved polychromy. These masks were worn during the dry season, for sowing ceremonies and notables' funerals.
