Suruku Bamana mask, Mali - Lot 22
Suruku Bamana mask, Mali Wood H.38 cm Provenance: French private collection A major initiatory effigy, this suruku mask represents an animal carrying hidden knowledge. It is used during male rites of passage, accompanying uncircumcised adolescents who are symbolically confronted with death and then reintegrated as men. Inspired by the hyena, a symbol of cunning and knowledge in Bamana cosmogony, it illustrates the discipline and effort required to access the secret teachings of Korè society.
