Borek ŠÍPEK (1949-2016) - Lot 37
Borek ŠÍPEK (1949-2016) Vase Blown glass Created in 1990 Signed under the base Rosenthal Publisher Rosenthal H 27 cm Attached is the original drawing of the vase Signed and dated 2004 50 x 65 cm Framed Born in Prague in 1949, Borek Sipek was trained from an early age by glass artist René Roubicek. After leaving Czechoslovakia in 1968, he moved to West Germany, where he studied architecture, scenography and philosophy, before setting up his own studio in Amsterdam in 1983. Returning to the Czech Republic in 1992, he co-founded the Ajeto glassworks in 1994, in collaboration with Bohemian master glassmakers. His work is expressed in furniture, cutlery and works in crystal and silver, produced by major manufacturers such as Driade, Alessi, Sawaya & Moroni and Manufacture de Sèvres. Breaking with functionalism, Sipek's design is expressive and visionary, where the object asserts its own strength through bold shapes, taut curves and an almost fantastical aesthetic.
