Son of Julien Depestre and Isabelle Gogels, Joseph Depestre (1757-1823) inherited the title of Count of Seneffe and Turnhout as the eldest son. He studied in Paris, where he eventually settled permanently, while continuing to embellish the Château de Seneffe, which he acquired in 1788. A shrewd businessman, he founded an international bank and made a considerable fortune. He is also known as a collector of paintings and objets d'art, and notably acquired Guardi's twelve Venetian Fêtes, most of which entered the Louvre's collections
through revolutionary seizures.
Joseph Depestre was ruined by the Revolution, and eventually fled France, where he had risked his life to save his business, to Italy. His property was confiscated. He did not return to his château in Seneffe until 1799, but continued to embellish it and accumulate works of art, most of them brought back from Italy.
