TOALDO (Giuseppe). Dei conduttori per preservare gli edifizi - Lot 103
TOALDO (Giuseppe). Dei conduttori per preservare gli edifizi da' fulmini. Venice, Gaspare Storti, 1778. In-8, xii pp.,
104 pp. 2 plates, red morocco, twisted scroll and frame decorated with a flowery garland, in the corners and center, fleurons with flowery palms and gilt stippling, ornate smooth spine, green title-piece, gilt edges (Italian binding of the period).
Second edition of this treatise on lightning conductors, illustrated with a vignette at the head and 2 plates in-fine.
Professor of astronomy and meteorology at the University of Padua, Toaldo (1719-1797) was one of the great popularizers of Benjamin Franklin's theories; by advocating the installation of conductors to protect buildings against lightning, this work contributed to the dissemination in Italy of Franklin's theories on atmospheric electricity - a subject that gave rise to lively scientific and religious debate.
A fine copy, from the library of Lyon collector Arthur-Auguste Brölemann (1826-1904), with his armorial bookplate.
Binding slightly rubbed. Small stains on boards.
