PAPAL BINDING. - ITALIAN MANUSCRIPT. - Riflessioni sopra la - Lot 98
PAPAL BINDING. - ITALIAN MANUSCRIPT. - Riflessioni sopra la vacatione attiva e passiva dei Vescovati, dedicate ad Innocenzo XI da un vilissimo servo non degno di nome. 1679. - Manuscript in-4 of (2) blank ff. with text transfers, (4) ff. n. ch., 31 ff. ms, (3) blank ff. with text transfers; red morocco, double framing of gilt fillets, fleurons and palms in the corners, large coat of arms in the center of the boards, ornate ribbed spine, gilt edges (Period binding).
This text comprises 15 reflections on the occupation and vacancy of bishoprics, written by an anonymous author and dedicated to Count Rasino of Milan. It evokes the conflict between Louis XIV and Pope Innocent XI, over control of bishoprics in France and the generalization of the droit de régale (the king collects the revenues of a vacant bishopric).
Carefully calligraphed, the text is nevertheless sometimes difficult to read, as the ink has run through the paper and the lines overlap.
Bound in morocco with the coat of arms of Pope Innocent XI (Benedetto Odescalchi, pope from 1676 to 1689).
The copy then belonged to Cardinal Antonio Saverio Gentili (1681-1753) (with his stamp on the 3rd f.); then to Hartwell de la Garde Grissell (1839-1907) - who was chamberlain to Popes Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X (with his bookplate).
Upper cover torn off, first cover slightly warped, rubbed.
