LURISTAN SCEPTRE TO THE "MASTER OF ANIMALS - Lot 36
LURISTAN SCEPTRE TO THE "MASTER OF ANIMALS
Bronze
Western Iran / Luristan or West Asian art
Iron Age, probably circa 1000-700 B.C.
Bronze scepter with openwork decoration featuring the emblematic theme of the Master of Animals, one of the most powerful and distinctive motifs in ancient Near Eastern art. The composition is organized around a stylized central figure, depicted standing frontally, mastering two confronting animals symmetrically arranged on either side of his body.
The human figure, treated with great economy of means, features a schematic torso, elongated legs and a hieratic attitude. It is surmounted by a vertical tubular element ending in a stylized human head, giving the object a strong verticality and ritual presence. The animals on the sides, with their curved horns and hanging tails, are part of a composite bestiary of goats, fantastic creatures and protective figures.
The motif of the Animal Master, very ancient in Eastern iconography, traditionally evokes the domination of the hero or divinity over the wild forces of nature. In the bronzes from Luristan, this theme takes on a particularly abstract, edgy form, where symmetry
symmetry and stylization create an image that is at once decorative, votive and symbolic.
By virtue of its format, tubular structure and iconography, this work belongs to the group of ceremonial bronze scepters or poles, probably used in a ritual or votive context. Its dense silhouette, frontal balance and legible composition make it a fine example of Iron Age metallurgical production in western Iran.
Old green and brown patina, with archaeological oxidation.
