IDOL WITH FANTASTIC ANIMALS - Lot 35
IDOL WITH FANTASTIC ANIMALS Bronze, Luristan, western Iran, 9th-7th century BC An important bronze idol from Luristan depicting a Janiform figure with a stylized body and equine thighs. The central figure, hieratic and powerfully schematized, masters on either side two fantastic animals facing each other, in a symmetrical composition characteristic of Luristan bronze art. The lower ends terminate in bases in the shape of rooster heads, adding a singular symbolic dimension to the object. With its composite iconography - double human figure, animal elements, fantastical creatures - this work is part of the complex repertoire of Luristan ritual bronzes, which combine protective power, war symbolism and the supernatural world. The quality of the casting, the balance of the composition and the rich iconography make this a fine example of these openwork idols or animal control figures, probably intended for votive or ceremonial use. Beautiful archaeological patina. H: 18 cm.
