Jean JANSEM (1920-2013) - Lot 60
Jean JANSEM (1920-2013) The feathered masks. Oil on canvas signed lower right, and titled on the stretcher. Dim. H. 26 W. 34 cm. Jean Jansem (1920-2013) A French painter of Armenian origin, Jean Jansem explores human fragility through figures of the humble, children, the elderly and beggars, with melancholy compassion. Trained at the Arts Décoratifs in Paris and influenced by the Montparnasse studios, he favors the human figure over abstraction. His travels in the Mediterranean fed his scenes of processions, carnivals, bullfighting and popular markets. He also painted dancers, nudes, circuses and masquerades, blending grace and gravity in an expressionist style marked by structured drawing and luminous matter. A master of oil, watercolor, ink and etching, Jansem's humanistic universe is internationally recognized, notably in Japan where a museum is dedicated to him.
