The second-hand market is expected to catch up with the new market within 10 years
The luxury watch market has reached unprecedented heights, with exceptional watches fetching record prices. After peaking in 2022 and then falling by 16.4% at the end of the pandemic period, the second-hand watch market has stabilized over the last 12 months, according to a study published by Deloitte on Thursday, January 16. Now growing again, it could rival the primary market within 10 years.
Traditional features such as perpetual calendars and minute repeaters are regaining popularity.
Finally, new markets are developing, such as that of independent watchmakers, renowned for their expertise and bespoke designs, whose production never exceeds small series. Brands such as J.P. Journe, Akrivia by Rexhep Rexhepi, and De Bethune are now competing with the giants of the industry. Buyers are no longer focusing solely on iconic watches from Rolex or Patek Philippe; now watches by Andersen Genève, Jürgensen, Philippe Dufour, Roger W. Smith, MB&F, and Greubel Forsey—especially the early models by Greubel Forsey—are gaining ground among collectors.
