Pierre Alechinsky (b. 1927, Brussels) is a major figure in contemporary European art, whose work lies at the crossroads of abstraction, expressionism and ancient graphic traditions. Trained at the École de La Cambre in Brussels, where he studied typography and illustration, he soon developed a particular attention to line and support. In 1949, he joined the CoBrA group, participating in a radical rethinking of academicism in favor of spontaneous, gestural creation. After the dissolution of the movement in 1951, Alechinsky pursued a personal style deeply influenced by Japanese calligraphy, discovered during his stay in Japan in 1955. He favored paper and ink, favoring rapid execution and expressive gesture. From the 1960s onwards, he developed a characteristic composition combining a central image with drawn margins, evoking illuminated manuscripts, prints and comic strips. His style is characterized by a fluid, sinuous line and constant attention to the materiality of the support.
