René Gouast (b. 1897) is a French artist whose painted work, developed from the second half of the XXᵉ century onwards, is rooted in a rigorous and personal approach. Working mainly in oils, he explores a plastic language marked by formal sobriety and great attention to the relationships between matter, light and composition. His paintings, often abstract or semi-abstract, emphasize visual rhythms, chromatic nuances and the density of the pictorial surface, inviting a slow, contemplative reading.
